About This Visa

If you are highly skilled in your area, you can move to Australia to work and live there permanently. You can sponsor your family and relatives too. That is possible through the Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189) program. Under this visa program, you don’t need sponsorship by an employer or anyone else. Skills are all that matters.

The 189 Visa offers all the benefits of Australian permanent residence for you and your family, which includes:

  • Work and live in Australia indefinitely

  • Opportunity to study in Australia

  • Enrol in Medicare, Australia’s state-run healthcare program

  • Opportunity to apply for Australian citizenship

  • Sponsor relatives for permanent residence

  • Travel in and out of Australia as you please

The Points Test

You must be able to meet the points score on your invitation letter (minimum 65 points). You must be able to meet the points score eligibility at the time you are invited to apply for the visa.

Everyone who wants to be invited to apply for the visa must submit an EOI. When you submit your EOI you will be ranked against other intending applicants and might be invited to apply for the visa (your EOI will stay in the pool for up to 2 years).  There is no cost to submit an EOI.
