Student Visa 

What is Student Visa?

A student visa allows any visa holder to come live in Australia temporarily to participate in a course of study. With this visa, visa holders can participate in an eligible course of study in Australia and travel in and out of Australia during the period of visa grant.

 

Those course of study may include:

  • Higher education course;

  • Secondary school;

  • Postgraduate research course;

  • Any other course of study or training in relation to defense student, foreign affairs student or any other full-time registered course, etc.

Student Visa (Subclass 500)

A Subclass 500 visa application can only be granted if the visa applicant satisfies all the following requirements at the time of decision:

1. Provide Evidence of enrolment.

2. Be a genuine student:

  • Intends to genuinely stay in Australia temporarily

  • Intends to comply with visa conditions

  • The case officer is also required to consider any other relevant matters that may determine whether the visa applicant is a genuine student 

 

3. English requirement

Unless the applicant is a passport holder of the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, the United States of America or the Republic of Ireland, the visa applicant must provide evidence of sufficient English at the time of decision.

 

4. Have a genuine access to sufficient funds:

The visa applicant has genuine access to sufficient funds to meet his or her expenses during their stay in Australia Additional evidence of financial capacity may also be required at the Minister’s discretion.

 

5.  Have adequate health insurance.

 

6. At least 6 years old at the time of application; and

 

7. Satisfy all public interest criteria?

 

Document Checklist
 

  • Completed Australian student visa application form (157A)

  • Paid visa application fee – currently AU$620 (~US$420) in most cases

  • Copy of passport biodata page (some students may be asked to physically provide their passport)

  • Certificate of Enrolment or Letter of Offer

  • Evidence of sufficient funds

  • Evidence of health insurance cover

  • English proficiency test results

  • Criminal record check results

  • Four recent passport-sized photographs


After you have assembled and scanned your supporting documents, you’ll need to create an account and apply with the online ImmiAccount application system.

Most visa applications take four weeks to process. If you study in Australia for a course that is longer than 10 months and finishes at the end of an Australian academic year (usually mid-December) your visa will usually be valid until 15 March the following year. If your course is longer than 10 months and finishes in January to October, your visa will usually be valid for two months following the completion of your course.

Under some circumstances, it may be possible to apply for a further visa at the end of your course (consult the Department of Home Affairs website for more details)

Student Guardian visa (subclass 590)

International students studying in Australia on a student visa may require a guardian if they are under 18 years of age. There may also be exceptional circumstances where a student over 18 years of age may need a guardian for religious or cultural reasons. The Student Guardian visa is for foreign nationals applying to stay in Australia as the guardian of a student who is studying in Australia. You can lodge your application for a student guardian visa at the same time that the student lodges their student visa application, or after the student arrives in Australia.

Application Requirements

  • be a parent or person who has custody of the student, or a relative who is 21 years or older and has been nominated in writing by a parent or someone who has custody of the student

  • not bring family members younger than 6 years of age, except under certain circumstances

  • be able to provide accommodation, general welfare and other support to the student unless you are applying for this visa with the support of the government your home country.

Bringing children


You can only bring children under six years old if either:

  • there are compelling and compassionate reasons

  • the granting the visa would significantly benefit the relationship between the Australian Government and the government of another country. If this is the case, you must be at least 21 and the student must be supported in writing by a parent or person who has custody.


The child must meet the same health requirements as you and have health insurance for the duration of their stay in Australia.

Children six years old or older can come with you but they must apply for their own student visa.
